Breast Augmentation Procedure
The surgical technique used will depend on several factors, including your anatomy, preferences, and the type of implant selected.
Breast Augmentation surgery generally takes 1-2 hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. The surgery can usually be performed as a day-stay procedure, however, depending on your individual condition, you may be required to stay overnight in the hospital. Dr Carmen will follow the surgical plan discussed with you prior to surgery.
Key steps of the procedure may include:
- Anaesthesia: You will receive general anaesthesia for your comfort and safety during surgery.
- Incision: An incision will be made in a predetermined location, which may include beneath the breast crease, around the areola, or in the armpit.
- Implant Placement: The breast implant is inserted into a pocket either beneath the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue.
- Closing the Incisions: Incisions are closed using sutures, surgical tape or skin adhesives.
- Recovery Room: After surgery, you will be taken to a recovery area where you will be monitored as you wake from anaesthesia.
Dr Munteanu will provide detailed instructions for post-operative care and will schedule follow-up appointments to support your recovery process.

A Hybrid Breast Augmentation – Adding Fat Grafting
A Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation utilises fat taken from other parts of your body through liposuction which is then deposited into the breasts alongside implants to alter the shape and size of the breasts. Fat can be transferred to your breasts either with an implant (Hybrid or Composite Breast Augmentation) or without an implant (Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation).
The risks in this procedure include infection, cysts, microcalcification, death of the fat cells, and even the possibility that the deposited cells will migrate out of the breast area. It may be necessary to undergo revision surgeries to maintain the shape of your breasts if you chose this option.
Recovery after Breast Augmentation Surgery
After your procedure, you’ll be monitored in recovery before you are discharged. Most patients are discharge on the same day however, some patients my need to stay overnight.
Before you leave, you’ll receive detailed instructions for wound care, managing discomfort, and wearing your support bra (generally required for the first 1–2 weeks). You’ll also be provided with contact details for Dr Carmen in case of any concerns during your early recovery.
Your breasts will be wrapped with sterile dressings, and you may feel some tightness, swelling, or bruising in the first few days. These effects are expected and typically ease with time and prescribed medication.
Light activity can usually be resumed within a few days, but strenuous movement, heavy lifting, and upper body exercise should be avoided for at least 4–6 weeks or until cleared by Dr Carmen. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your progress and guide your return to regular activities.
Final outcomes may take several months to develop as swelling settles and tissues adjust.
